Hematology:
A number of blood-related disorders may affect pets throughout their lives, and the accurate diagnosis and treatment of these conditions are vital. The team at AniHealHospital is well-versed in veterinary hematology.
Common blood afflictions such as hemophilia, or the inability of blood to clot leading to excessive, uncontrolled bleeding, thrombocytopenia (platelet deficiency), anticoagulant rodenticide intoxication (deficiency of blood clotting proteins), hemolytic anemia or the destruction of red blood cells, immune-mediated neutropenia which is the destruction of white blood cells, and myelodysplasia or abnormal bone marrow function may occur in pets at any age.
The common genetic blood disorder in canines is called Von Willebrand’s disease which may pass from parent to puppy.
Routine blood testing, carried out at our on-site, state-of-the-art labs, allows our veterinarians, pathologists, and technicians to study red and white blood cells and platelets in order to identify anomalies or diseases of the blood cells.
In addition to routine tests to study blood cells, proteins, and plasma, individual or specialized tests may be suggested to test certain blood components or to screen for specific conditions. These may include reticulocyte counts in anemic animals, fibrinogen by heat precipitation which may indicate renal disease, and occult blood tests performed on feces to assess gastrointestinal conditions.
